Page SIG

Welcome to Page SIG, our new feature highlighting the activities of our chapter’s various SIGs (Special Interest Groups) and our NJ City Group. We encourage you to join and participate in these important subsets of our chapter:

The Business Development SIG’s April event was one of the most highly anticipated and talked about events on our calendar. We were fortunate to have Special Guest Speaker, Idan Nishlis, join us from Israel and introduce how legal marketing is transforming the Israeli legal market. Although Israel has the most lawyers per capita in the world, its law firms are just now realizing the importance of legal marketing. Recently, new legislation was passed to allow foreign firms to enter the Israeli market for the first time and establish a presence on the ground. Idan presented many facts that were previously unknown about Israel and the wealth of opportunity that exists there. This is certainly a space to watch in the near future.

Chairs: Jean Heaton, Citrin Cooperman and Katie O’Rourke, Concep

The CMO SIG brings together Chief Marketing Officers and heads of business development and marketing departments at law firms in the NY metropolitan area. We meet monthly either for a substantive roundtable discussion at a host law firm or for a casual networking reception at a midtown location. Past programs have included guest speakers from LinkedIn, The American Lawyer, and Citi’s law firm services group.

Chairs: Despina Kartson, Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP, Dawn Gertz Longfield, Davis & Gilbert LLP

The Client Relationship Management SIG is a platform for interacting with other CRM users in the LMA community. The aim is to share valuable information regarding the implementation and operation of CRM. Our members are law firm professionals using CRM for legal and other professional services’ marketing and business development. Through presentations and roundtable format discussions, we discuss best practices, success stories and even war stories.

The most recent session was held in March 2014. Stanton Allen legal CRM consultant Michael Warren spoke about big data and its practical applications in a law firm. The next session at the end of June will be a round table discussion led by Chris Frisch from Clients First Consulting.

Chair: Matt Parfitt, Vuture Group

The NYLMA Corporate Social Responsibility SIG organized its first Earth Day Volunteer Event on Sunday, April 27th at the Clayton Williams Community Gardens, a cornerstone in the community for over 20 years. Volunteers helped with preparations to begin the spring planting by fixing planting beds, mulching, and even building a compost bin! It was a beautiful day to be outside and also enjoy a nice barbeque after all that labor. Thanks volunteers, everyone did a great job!

In May, the CSR SIG will be hosting an event on social and environmental responsibility trends and insights and takeaways for law firm business and communications with Fenton Communications, a social change communications agency that has worked with companies like Patagonia, National Geographic, and the ACLU.

Chairs: Anna Bernardis, Kobre & Kim LLP, Gayatri Joshi ecoAnalyze LLP

Future Leaders SIG

Plans are underway for several upcoming events, which will be unveiled soon. In related news, four NYLMA Future Leaders SIG members were spotlighted in the current issue of Strategies’ for its cover story “Flight of the Chief Marketing Coordinator”, which highlights young legal marketers making a real difference in their firms:

  • Maggie Coughlan, Dechert LLP
  • Matt Loomis, Anderson Kill
  • Michelle Rocha, Fried Frank
  • Justin Turetsky, Paul Weiss

Chair: Matt Loomis, Anderson Kill & Olick LLP

Small Firm SIG

On May 13th, The Small Firm Special Interest Group will host an event, “The Rise of the Boutique.”

In today’s market, clients often choose to work with a boutique instead of a larger firm because of the boutique’s size and focus. Clients understand that the lawyer’s skills are far more important than the length of office hallways. This intimate discussion will cover the trends and key factors that enable smaller firms to punch well above their weight class. (here’s the link)

Chair: Tiffany Yarde, Cohen & Gresser LLP

Social Media SIG

The Social Media Shared Interest Group provides opportunities for chapter members to learn more about how to incorporate social media platforms, and digital content strategy and distribution into their firm’s marketing programs. Social Media SIG members will also have the opportunity to share best practices in this quickly evolving area. Programs planned for 2014 include a look at visual content marketing, how to use some of the new social media platforms such as Pinterest, Slideshare and Instagram into your marketing efforts; and how to effectively market your firm and lawyers through video marketing.

Chair: Stefanie Marrone, Proskauer Rose LLP

Special Events SIG

There was (no surprise!) an excellent turnout for the April 9th Special Events SIG meeting at the Gramercy Park Hotel. All who attended were treated a wonderful experience at the hotel, a true Manhattan landmark, and its excellent location, impressive space, exquisite décor, professional and friendly staff, and delicious bites and drinks. All were also grateful for a tour of the private spaces and sleeping rooms. And of course, everyone fell in love with the Terrace! Many thanks to the GPH’s outstanding team for its hospitality.

Chairs: Victoria Kononenko, Hogan Lovells US LLP, Michelle Rocha, Kobre & Kim LLP

New Jersey City Group

The New Jersey Group will host a free luncheon on Wednesday June 18 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. to network with other NJ Legal Marketers and share some insights from this year’s LMA National Conference from a panel including 2014 LMA National president Tim Corcoran, Lindsay Griffiths of International Lawyers Network, Joshua Peck of Duane Morris LLP and Robert Algeri of Great Jakes Marketing Company. Amy Adams of Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer will moderate and host the luncheon at her firm’s office in Woodbridge, N.J.

The New Jersey Group will also gather over lunch on May 22 to view the 2nd Annual NYLMA Chief Marketing Officer Panel via Skype. Mitchell Rait will host from Budd Larner in Short Hills.

The New Jersey Group recently enjoyed networking over lunch and viewing the NYC Chapter’s March 20th program “Learning from Other Industries” via Skype from the Wilentz, Goldman & Spitzer office in Woodbridge.

Chair: Amy Adams, Wilentz Goldman & Spitzer P.A
