In Memoriam: Bruce Marcus

by Tom Mariam on March 17, 2015

Former NYLMA chapter member Bruce Marcus, a true pioneer in legal industry and professional services marketing, passed away shortly before Christmas at the age of 90. Bruce was an ardent supporter of professional services marketing and a friend to many people who were starting in the business, including many members of our chapter.

Mr. Marcus developed the first marketing program for a Big Eight accounting firm in 1951. He subsequently consulted or worked for all eight of the (then) Big Eight accounting firms, and several major law firms in the 100, as well as many smaller ones. He was the author of 16 books, most on marketing, including Professional Services Marketing 3.0.

He also wrote and published The Marcus Letter, possibly the first online newsletter on marketing for lawyers and accountants. It was read internationally by more than 25,000 lawyers, accountants, consultants, and the marketers who serve them.

Bruce Marcus was featured in an article written by chapter member Tom Mariam on “10 Tips to Achieving Marketing Professionalism” in the February 2009 edition of Strategies. We are re-running this article in tribute to Bruce Marcus.
