Welcome to Page SIG, where we feature highlighting the activities of our chapter’s various SIGs (Special Interest Groups) and our two suburban City Groups. We encourage you to join and participate in these important subsets of our chapter. Contact information is included for each group: 

Business Development (BD)

The BD SIG has some exciting events planned for 2015 and a new co-chair to start the year! Welcome Matthew Olsen!  Look out for the next event including special guest speakers and combined events with other SIGs.

Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)

The CMO SIG’s February meeting featured a presentation by Elizabeth Duffy of Acritas where she revealed Acritas’ 2015 U.S. Law Firm Brand Index.  Ms. Duffy discussed how brand is measured and what brand means to different law firms.  The Index was based on a survey of 692 U.S. senior corporate counsel and an additional 183 senior in-house counsel outside the U.S. The results show that it is becoming increasingly difficult for firms to stand out from the crowd solely on the basis of expertise, client service and strong relationships. Developing a strong identity by offering value and by developing commercial awareness and commercial understanding is becoming an imperative. The CMO SIG’s next session on March 26 will feature a talk on law firm strategy with Wendy Bernero.

Client Relationship Management (CRM)

The CRM SIG is a platform for interacting with other CRM users in the LMA community. The aim is to share valuable information regarding the implementation and operation of CRM for marketing and business development.  The CRM SIG this year is planning five or six events that will cover a range of topics and include product webinars, lunch and learn meetings, and an evening cocktail,

The first two programs will be held in March:

Wednesday March 18 @ 12:00 p.m.  – One-hour webinar presenting Business Development from Thomson Reuters Elite Webinar.

Friday March 20 @ 12:00 p.m.  – One-hour webinar presenting OnePlace CRM.

On May 20 at 6:30 p.m., the CRM SIG will host a cocktail discussion, “CRM for Business Development” with Chris Fritsch of CLIENTSFirst Consulting.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

The NYLMA CSR SIG will be hosting its second Earth Day event in April and “give back” in December.  The CSR SIG will also be hosting one or two CSR roundtables, as well as two or three sessions on local sustainability services.  The group also plans to have periodic sustainability happy hour chats at sustainable or organic venues throughout the year.

Future Leaders

The NYLMA Future Leaders SIG met on February 5 at Anderson Kill’s New York office for a program, “Start the New Year Right: Goal Setting Tips and BD Trends You Need to Know!”  The program, presented by Wisnik Career Enterprises, offered the tools needed to establish individual goals for 2015 and begin achieving them. This session focused on identifying your work values, the skills and knowledge you want to expand, and ways in which you can become an even more valued contributor to your firm.

The Future Leaders SIG is developing plans to host later this spring a number of meetings that will focus on personal and professional growth, including a discussion of the do’s and don’ts of navigating a law firm as a young professional and an exploration of the value of mentorship.

Small Firms

The NYLMA Small Firm Special Interest Group (SIG) has been formed to assist small law firms (defined by less than 100 lawyers or fewer than five marketing professionals) by providing important and timely information on an array of legal marketing issues so that you can maximize the time and resources you have and increase your business development efforts.  The group plans to offer three events this year, possibly focusing on:

  • Successful marketing and promotional programs for low cost (or free)
  • Implementing marketing technology on a budget (with few workarounds)
  • Small Firm Marketing – Career or Stopping Place

Social Media

The Social Media SIG is scheduled to host a program on “How to Measure the Success of Your Firm’s Social Media Strategy: Tips and Best Practices” on April 1 from 6-8 pm at Proskauer’s New York office.

The Social Media SIG focuses on helping to inform and guide group members on the tools and strategies that can help members to successfully use social media at their firms.  The group will look outside of the legal industry for inspiration to see how other corporations and industries are using social media as part of their integrated digital marketing strategy. The Social Media SIG will also draw upon the expertise of group members and service providers to learn from their current social media endeavors in order to communicate best practices to members.

Special Events SIG

Hasan Elkomey is the new chair of the Special Events SIG., which assists in securing New York City venues for the NYLMA’s industry-leading educational programs and social events throughout the year. Hasan has already led the SIG in adding three new venues for 2015, including the Gansevoort Park Hotel for the NYLMA kickoff on February 18, as well as the Gansevoort Meatpacking and Indigo Hotel Chelsea for upcoming events. The SIG is currently working on securing a rooftop location for this year’s “Summer Soirée.”

New Jersey City Group (NJ)

The NJ City Group will continue to increase awareness of New Jersey-specific legal marketing issues and encourage attendance at events throughout 2015.  The group will continue to join appropriate NYLMA events via Skype this year, in addition to hosting live programs (such as the Annual Conference recaps held in 2013 and 2014).  The NJ City Group also plans to increase communication among NJ legal marketers through the use of email and social media.
